'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 spoilers, news: EP speaks on honoring show's legacy; Stefan and Caroline 's relationship to be tested

Aside from tackling the Mystic Falls gang's greatest adversary, the upcoming season of "The Vampire Diaries" will also honor the program's eight-year legacy.
To celebrate the show's successful run, familiar faces are set to return, including Tyler Lockwood. Although Nina Dobrev has yet to confirm if she will be back as Elena, rumor has it that she might reprise her role one last time for the season 8 finale. The farewell season will also feature iconic events in the story including the Miss Mystic Falls, Mystic Falls carnival and Founder's Day.
In a recent interview with TV Guide, executive producer/creator Julie Plec revealed that each episode will also be titled after dialogue lines from the show which had a special meaning to Plec and the writers. "We have a lot of plans to pay tribute to everything we've done in the past," she explained. "Our plans probably outweigh our real estate of space to actually accomplish all of it. But we've had a lot of fun in the room just reliving our favorite moments and our favorite characters and trying to think of really clever ways to reintegrate elements of the show from the past."
Meanwhile, Stefan and Caroline's bond will continue to be strong in the upcoming season. During an on-set visit at the show's Atlanta studio, star Candice King told TV Line that the pair will be in a "great spot" at the beginning of the 8th installment. "... coming into Season 8, there are some nice light, steamy moments to get you started," she teased. However, it is also important to note that it won't be all rainbows and sunshine.
King added that Stefan and Caroline's relationship will be tested. "They have to balance some pretty adult things," she said. With Caroline and Alaric co-parenting and being a part of a blended family, while Stefan is hell-bent on saving Damon, the couple will be going through a very difficult time.
The 8th and final season of "The Vampire Diaries" premieres on Friday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
