'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 spoilers news: EP hints new big bad; Who will save Damon?

The CW's hit supernatural drama "The Vampire Diaries" will soon return for its eighth season, and viewers are still recovering from the intense season 7 finale which aired last month.

Season 7 left off with Damon and Enzo trapped with a yet-to-be-named villain, and there are speculations on who will save Damon once the show returns. TV Line speculates that the most obvious choice would be Stefan, but the possibility of Elena returning to rescue Damon is also on the table. On another note, Bonnie might also be Damon's savior given their strong (but platonic) connection with each other. However, executive producer Julie Plec previously noted that Bonnie will be powerless without her magic following a terrible situation in the upcoming season, so helping Damon might be less than likely to happen.

Speaking of Bonnie, season 8 will be her last appearance on the show before she leaves Mystic Falls for good. Bonnie's portrayer Kat Graham confirmed her departure to Us Weekly back in April with hints about her farewell season, saying: "Season 8 will be my last season. I just hope that whatever I do after, the crew can come with me. If the crew can come with me, then we'll be good. The crew is going to be the hardest thing to let go because we are a family. But you know what, another season is a whole other year, and we're going to blow it out."

As for the big bad who took Damon and Enzo, Plec did not want to give anything away, but she gave some hints about the creature's description. "We are not calling it anything, we are waiting for Season 8. I mean, internally, we're calling it something, but we're not telling people what that is yet... What could it be that's been around for thousands of years? We didn't see it, but it has some creepy ass monster hands, and it has the ability to get inside your head and strip away everything good about you. There's a nice mystery taking us into next season about what exactly this creature is," she explained.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 is expected to premiere sometime in the Fall on The CW.
