'The Vampire Diaries' Season 8 news, updates, rumors: Nina Dobrev coming back to complete Elena's story?
It has been reported that The CW's supernatural drama series "The Vampire Diaries" was renewed for an eighth season, but the question still lies whether Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev) will be coming back to the show before it ends. The TV series' showrunner gave her thoughts on Dobrev's character's possible return in the closing chapters of the story.
In an interview with TV Line, "The Vampire Diaries" creator and executive producer Julie Plec said that she is still hoping that Dobrev is still open to doing another appearance on the show. She also said that she is hoping Dobrev could find time to return even for just the final episode. Dobrev's character, Elena Gilbert, was the reigning main female antagonist in the show for six straight seasons after all. It was not until the show's Season 6 finale that Dobrev gave up her female lead status and left the show.
Plec revealed in the interview that Elena still has a lot of stories that the show was not able to touch due to Dobrev's exit last year. If the actress gave a go signal to do the remaining chapter based on her availability, then they would be able to finish it.
"There is still a chapter of Elena's story left to be told... I'll take Dobrev for whatever she's willing to do to tell that story," Plec said.
It can be recalled from Season 6 that Elena and her best friend, Bonnie Bennet (played by Kat Graham) were placed under a jinx by the show's former villain, Kai Parker (played by Chris Wood). The jinx would place Elena in a deep sleep and there would be no physical or magical means of waking her up from the cursed slumber. The only way to wake her up is through Bonnie's death. The main characters of the show have then decided to let Bonnie live the days remaining in her mortal life while Elena lies asleep in a protected coffin.
Going back to the present situation of the characters in Season 7, Bonnie is in danger of facing death after learning that the pills her present boyfriend, Enzo (played by Michael Malarkey), has given her have a fatal side-effect. Will this ultimately lead to the demise of Bonnie, as well as Elena's return after many years of unconsciousness?
"The Vampire Diaries" also stars Ian Somerhalder as vampire Damon Salvatore and Paul Wesley as Damon's brother, Stefan Salvatore.
