'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 episode 6 spoilers: Stefan does everything he can; Katherine to return?

Stefan (Paul Wesley) makes an unexpected sacrifice in the upcoming episode of The CW's supernatural drama "The Vampire Diaries" season 8.
Titled "Detoured On Some Random Backwoods Path to Hell," the sixth episode will center on realizations and life-changing decisions. According to the official synopsis, Caroline (Candice King) resorts to extreme measures to make sure that her family is safe when her children become the focus of the Siren's new plan
While racing the clock, Stefan (Paul Wesley) promises to do everything he can to keep the twins safe. Tensions between Alaric (Matt Davis) and Caroline starts to boil over, leading both of them to deal with the harsh realities of their family's future. When Enzo (Michael Malarkey) realizes that he is unable to fight off Sybil's (guest star Nathalie Kelley) latest move, Stefan tries to help by diving into his subconscious. Along the way, Stefan sets off a chain of events that forces him to face a life-altering decision. Wesley, who plays Stefan, directed the episode.
Following Katherine's (Nina Dobrev) disappearance, many fans are wondering if she will ever be back as the story heads to its conclusion. In an interview, showrunner Julie Plec was asked if Katherine is in hell. "I will confirm nothing, but the visual similarities are not accidental," she told Entertainment Weekly's Spoiler Room. If one thing is for sure, hell will be the focal point of what will come next.
"The big question of the season is: How do our characters fit in this world?" Plec continued. "Are they all doomed? Is there a chance for redemption? Can you earn your way back out of a one-way ticket to Hell? And even characters that have been heroes, are they already marked? If so, what the hell are they going to do about it?"
"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 airs every Friday night at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
