'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 episode 5 spoilers: Damon spirals down to self-destruction; story to dive deeper into Sybil's origin

Tragedy strikes to close to home in the upcoming episode of The CW's hit supernatural drama "The Vampire Diaries" season 5.
Titled "Coming Home Was a Mistake," next week's episode will explore one character spiraling down a dangerous path of self-destruction. According to the official synopsis, Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) latest actions and decisions prove that he may be beyond the point of return. Stefan (Paul Wesley) is still unwilling to give up on his brother,so he is forced to make a difficult decision that possibly threatens to change their relationship forever.
Meanwhile, Bonnie (Kat Graham) gets advice from Caroline (Candice King) in an effort to learn how to break through to Enzo (Michael Malarkey). Matt (Zach Roerig) receives a mysterious box of messages he's received, so he attempts to decipher it. Upon realizing that tragedy is starting to strike close to home, Stefan and the other characters are forced to recall what matters most to them.
Sybil (Nathalie Kelley) is probably the most ruthless villain in the show, and this week's episode saw her being trapped in the Armory. The plot revealed that Sybil has a sister, and Kelley hinted that more of her origin story will be explored next week. "They share a story about how they become sirens and that's what you will learn in the next episode. They're very, very old and there's a lot of tragedy about how they came to this island and eventually turned into sirens," she told TV Guide.
As the series approaches its end, the actress mentioned that the characters will have a lot of realizations.Also, they will all try to redeem themselves in some way. "It's the final season so I think everybody has to look in the mirror and ask really serious questions about punishment and repercussions for one's past actions," she continued. "The theme of redemption is strong. Are these people redeemable after doing awful things? Can you come back from that? Is redemption possible for these characters? It's a big theme and it's a fitting theme as [creator Julie Plec] is wrapping up this story."
