'The Strain' season 3 release date, spoilers news 2016: Premiere set for Aug. 28, new trailer featuring New York City in shambles revealed

FX's hit horror drama "The Strain" will soon hit the TV screens for its much-awaited third season, with more chilling and suspenseful episodes featuring the Big Apple in a more chaotic state due to the vampire outbreak.

The show started out with the virus slowly spreading to humans, but now it seems like the outbreak has reached its peak, leaving the humans outnumbered. Season 2 left off with Dr. Ephraim Goodweather's (Corey Stoll) vampire wife Kelly (Natalie Brown) managing to take their child Zach (Max Charles). She also infected Nora (Mia Maestro) with the virus but she chose to electrocute herself and die rather than turn into another blood-thirsty creature.

In the first moments of the promo clip, Dr. Goodweather's voice can be heard in the background saying, "It's been 23 days since the world as we knew it ceased to exist." New York City continues to fall into chaos and all the citizens fear for their lives. The government's focus is on the virus as they race the clock to control it, so the humans are left with no choice but to protect themselves.

As noted by Collider, cast and crew members from the show will likely attend the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con on July 21-24 to give further details about the forthcoming season.

The network also released an official description for season 3 which reads:

"As season three begins, New York City is a battleground. Written off by the federal government, the people of New York City must fight for survival on their own. The question is who will win? Humans or strigoi? Our heroes win victories, but are not winning the war. Beset by personal conflicts – betrayal, disappointment, paranoia – our group is splintering... Meanwhile, the Master is close to executing an irreversible transformation of the world. Is there still hope to save the city and humanity?"

Tune in to the season 3 premiere of "The Strain" which is scheduled to air this coming August 28, Sunday at 10 p.m. EST on FX.
