'The Strain' season 3 release date, plot spoilers 2016: Creator hints surprising 'new character combinations' & 'amazing effects'; series to extend beyond season 4?
FX's suspense thriller "The Strain" is all set to return to the small screen later this month, along with some new tricks up its sleeve fans should look forward to.
Season 3 picks up with the evil epidemic quickly spreading — turning New York City into a chaotic battleground that has been written off by the U.S. government. Citizens are left to fight for their own survival while the Master gets closer to execute his plan on completely transforming the world. Private armies will emerge but it remains to be seen if they can outmatch the frightening creatures.

Producer/creator Chuck Hogan, who co-wrote the source material with Guillermo del Toro, hinted "new character combinations" in the story which will surprise viewers. "Some people come together and join force who I don't think anyone really expect," he told reporters during the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "And that's been a lot of fun to see." He also teased impressive graphic effects as well as a "pretty intense" set piece they have prepared for the season finale.
"The Strain" was initially planned to have three seasons but according to executive producer Carlton Cuse, their plans for the show's direction have changed over the years. "When we first sold it, we sold it as a three-season show," he explained. "Then we did talk about five seasons and now, as we are beginning to work on the fourth season ... we're in the process of trying to figure out creatively how many more episodes we have. We're sorting that out right now." If the thriller drama goes beyond season 4, Cuse says he is also contemplating on moving the story to a different place.
The season premiere will begin with an extended recap featuring the previous 23 days of the vampire infestation in the Big Apple, giving fans an idea on how the situation worsened. Cuse also promised "epic sequences" as the locals fight against the blood-sucking strigois.
Tune in to "The Strain" season 3 on Sunday, Aug. 28 on FX.
