'The Predator' release date, latest news: Keegan-Michael Key joins Shane Black's 'Predator' film reboot

A comedic star is set to join the upcoming sci-fi action franchise sequel/reboot titled "The Predator."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Keegan-Michael Key, widely recognized for his part in Comedy Central's cult comedy series "Key and Peele," is in final negotiations to join the growing cast of 20th Century Fox's upcoming film "The Predator," a reboot of the iconic sci-fi action franchise, "Predator."
Key has been nominated multiple times at the Emmy Awards for his work on "Key and Peele," the sketch show he co-headlined with fellow comedian Jordan Peele. Key has also appeared in several films in the past few years such as "Tomorrowland" and "Vacation." In 2016, he starred in the comedy movie titled "Keanu." He is also set to appear in a lead role in Joe Swanberg's film "Win It All."
Aside from Key, "The Predator" cast includes actors such as Benicio del Toro, Trevante Rhodes, Boyd Holbrook, and Olivia Munn.
Serving as a reboot of the original "Predator," which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger back in 1987, the upcoming "Predator" film will be directed by Shane Black ("Iron Man 3" and "The Nice Guys"). The script is written by Fred Dekker, Black's co-writer in "Monster Squad," based on a story the duo had written together.
The first "Predator" film featured Schwarzenegger as the leader of a United States special forces team who was being preyed on by an alien entity who hunts mainly for the thrill of it. It was followed by a direct sequel titled "Predator 2" in 1990. Eventually, the franchise crossed over with Fox's "Alien" franchise for two more sequels such as "Alien vs. Predator" and "AvP: Requiem." A film reboot was also released in 2010 — Nimrod Antal's "Predators."
As reported by Coming Soon, the upcoming film will remain in the continuity of the first two original "Predator" movies and will not be a complete reboot of the franchise. Black has reportedly stated that a reference in the script explains why the upcoming film was given a singular title.
"The Predator" is scheduled to hit theaters on Feb. 9, 2018.
