'The Originals' season 4 news, updates, release date: Series canceled? 'The Vampire Diaries' cast crossing over to New Orleans?

Is "the Originals" season 4 the last for the series? That's what rumors seem to point to, and fans surmised that the shortened fourth season is an indication that indeed, the series is ending.

Apparently, the decision to cancel "The Originals" after the upcoming decision came from The CW itself. The poor rating of the series is speculated as the catalyst for the cancellation. Still, "The Originals" remains to be one of The CW's popular series, so unless an official confirmation comes from the network executives, rumors of the cancellation should be taken with a grain of salt.

Fans speculated that the purported villain for season 4, which is touted as the worst one Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) will ever face, will take Klaus' life once and for all, signifying the end of the series. However, that particular storyline might bring Klaus' daughter, Hope's (Summer Fontana) powers to light and make the series even more interesting.

Rumors that the show has been cancelled might have been hyped by the recent announcement of "The Vampire Diaries'" cancellation. As many know, "The Originals" is a spin-off series of the former. Nevertheless, in an interview with Showbiz Junkies, Phoebe Tonkin, who plays Hayley on the series, explained the reason for the shortened fourth season.

According to Tonkin, the shortened episode order for "The Originals" season 4 is so that the storylines become "a little more condensed." With that said, changes for the show and the characters are to be expected.

For instance, there are reports that some of the cast members of "The Vampire Diaries" will cross over to "The Originals" once the former finishes its eighth and final season. Nina Dobrev, who once guested on "The Originals" as Katherine Pierce and Tatia will apparently be reprising both roles in the upcoming fourth season.

Other reports say "The Vampire Diaries" lead stars Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder (who play brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore, respectively) will head over to the New Orleans to help the Mikaelsons. Again, unless The CW makes an announcement, talks about the series' cancellation are plain speculations.

"The Originals" season 4 is expected to premiere midseason 2017 on The CW.
