From the Trinity of the oldest non-original vampires in the world down to a former family, friend, and ally, the reign of the powerful Mikaelson family has been constantly threatened throughout the third season of CW's supernatural drama thriller "The Originals." After an unfortunate decision made by the Mikaelsons to save their family, one of their closest allies would become their worst enemy yet.

To recap, the previous episode of "The Originals" featured the funeral of the Mikaelsons' witch ally, Davina Claire (Danielle Campbell). Kol Mikaelson (Nate Buzolic) inadvertently killed his girlfriend Davina as orchestrated by the vengeful spirits of the ancestors. Davina's adoptive father, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), asked the help of the Mikaelsons to bring her back. However, Freya Mikaelson (Riley Voelkel) needed to use the ancestor's magic to kill Lucien (Andrew Lees), and in order to do so, they had to sacrifice Davina.

The Mikaelsons' decision caused Marcel to question his relationship with the Originals, thinking that the family he had served for hundreds of years would only turn their backs on him in the end. Freya and Elijah Mikaelson (Daniel Gillies) believed that Marcel's change of heart is a sign that he is the prophesized beast who will bring an end to the Mikaelsons. In an effort to stop the prophecy before it happens, Elijah killed Marcel, although he is not aware that the latter already consumed the same serum that gave Lucien the power capable of destroying the Originals. The end of the episode showed Marcel coming back from the dead with blood red eyes.

The teaser for the finale episode shows the return Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt) who is trying to stop the vengeful Marcel with his plans against her family. Marcel will put Niklaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) to a trial in front of all his enemies. As the prophecy indicates that a friend, family and foe will cause the death of the Mikaelsons, that person that fits to the description is none other than Marcel himself. Klaus's disappearance three years later in the previous crossover episode of "The Vampire Diaries" raised some concerns among the fans.

"The Originals" executive producer Julie Plec mentioned in an interview with TV Line about the intriguing disappearance of Klaus in New Orleans as Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) visited his hometown.

"As we know from 'The Originals,' there's a prophecy predicting the demise of the Mikaelson family, so it was a nice little tease for viewers of that show to ask themselves, 'Wait, what the hell happened to Klaus?'" said Plec.
