'The Night Shift' renewal update: Series likely to be renewed due to high ratings; EPs talk possible season 4

NBC's hit medical drama "The Night Shift" wrapped up its third season with an emotionally jam-packed finale last week. Since the episode concluded with a cliffhanger, fans are concerned about the yet-to-be-renewed show's fate. To set the record straight, executive producers Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah sat down in an interview to discuss the events in season 3 and a possible season 4.
Speaking with Cartermatt, Judah admits it's difficult to guess what lies ahead but he remains hopeful, particularly because the drama became a summer hit. "I don't think we can predict anything that NBC is going to do with us," he said. "We were hoping we'd be picked up by now; we're the #1 scripted show of the summer. I don't know how we can go up from that." Sachs added that they had to shoot several versions of the finale before narrowing it down to one.
Season 3 left off with TC (Eoin Macken) working in a war zone when an incoming missile blew up their campsite, leaving the doctor bloodied and unconcious. Fans feared that he might be dead because of his injuries, but Judah stated it's not the end for TC."This is a world where TC started alone, and he ends up alone," he explained. "Theoretically, creatively, we are at peace with that decision. That doesn't mean that he is dead. There are a lot of different ways we can go with that."
Based on ratings performance, Deadline speculates that there might be a good chance for "The Night Shift" to be renewed. The numbers increased to a tenth last week which not only earned a season high among adults aged 18-49, but also matched its top-rating season 2 finale last year. Compared to its 5.20 million viewers back in May 2015, the season 3 finale clocked in an average of 5.80 million viewers.
"The Night Shift" has yet to be renewed by NBC, but the producers confirmed that the network will decide on the series' fate on or before Oct. 30.
