'The Night Of' season 2 spoilers, news: Riz Ahmed hints possible second installment; series to focus on new mystery?

HBO's 8-episode rookie drama "The Night Of" recently wrapped up with an intriguing finale, and fans are now wondering what lies ahead for Nasir "Naz" Kahn (Riz Ahmed) after he was released from jail.
The show's riveting tale follows college student Naz who was accused of and imprisoned for killing a young woman. After eight weeks of speculating if he committed the crime or not, the season 1 finale finally saw him being free after the jury was not able to reach a verdict. The ending, however, only gave more questions than answers since it did not conclusively spell out Naz's innocence or the killer's identity.
Lead star Riz Ahmed recently caught up with The Hollywood Reporter where he shared his thoughts on the possibility of a season renewal. "I think it was conceived of as a one-season one-off and perhaps there's a second season they might do a different case like they did in the British version of the show. I think sometimes it's said, 'Better to quit while you're ahead,'" he explained.
For the uninitiated, "The Night Of" is based on the 2008-2009 British TV series "Criminal Justice." The latest official statement from the execs was earlier this month when producer, writer and director Steven Zaillian mentioned that they are already talking about a possible second installment.
"We're thinking about it and if we come up with something we all feel is worthy of doing, we'll do it," he told reporters during the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "This was designed as a stand-alone piece. That being said, there are ways of certainly kind of taking what it feels like and what it's about and doing another season on another subject."
HBO has yet to announce a season renewal for "The Night Of." More details are expected in the coming weeks or months.
