'The Night Of' season 2 news, spoilers rumors: EP talks possibility of renewal from HBO; Riz Ahmed speaks on Nas' decision not to plead guilty

HBO's rookie crime drama "The Night Of" is only halfway through its eight-episode run, but there are already talks about second season being developed.
During the Television Critics Association press tour, executive producer Steven Zaillian weighed in on the possibility of a season renewal and shared some ideas they have in case the network greenlights another run. "We're thinking about it and if we come up with something we all feel is worthy of doing, we'll do it," he said. "This was designed as a stand-alone piece. ... That being said, there are ways of certainly kind of taking what it feels like and what it's about and doing another season on another subject."
Based on the first season of BBC's "Criminal Justice," the mini-series chronicles the life of an ordinary man named Nasir "Nas" Khan who was charged with murder after discovering the dead body of a girl he met the night before. Set to air its fifth episode on Sunday, the plot continues to thicken after Nas encountered new complications. He was denied bail because of the brutality of the crime while still claiming his innocence. His lawyers grew more frustrated of his actions after they encouraged him to just plead for manslaughter in exchange for a reduced sentence.
"I think Nas seizes up in extreme circumstances," lead actor Riz Ahmed told The New York Post. "He's a New Yorker. You carry yourself with a certain amount of wariness. He has good reason to distrust authority post-9/11. Who he is, and where he is, creates an air of mutual distrust."
New evidences linked to the vicious murder come to light, but Nas' fate continues to hang in the balance. Ahmed did not give away major spoilers, but the season finale will see if Nas will remain behind bars or finally have the freedom he deserves.
