'The Leftovers' season 3 spoilers, plot news: Showrunner shares clues on finale, Patti to come back in Kevin's life?

\"The Leftovers\" season 3 won\'t be all gloomy for Kevin (Justin Theroux) and co. | HBO

The third season of HBO's "The Leftovers" is one of the most-anticipated shows to premiere next year, and fans are wondering if all the "Sudden Departure" mysteries will finally be solved when the hit drama series comes to an end.

One of the previous season's highlights happened during the "International Assassin" episode.  Up to now, what the "Man on Bridge" told Kevin before he walked off with Patti to the well is still a mystery, but showrunner Damon Lindelof recently gave some insights about it. "When it comes to Leftovers, I don't comment on what we will and won't answer," he told TV Line. "But you might want to pay close attention to the accent the brilliant Bill Camp was using... "

Patti, who is portrayed by Ann Dowd, is just a figment of Kevin's imagination. Season 2 saw Kevin facing the reality about Patti, but there are some speculations that she will come back next season for a flashback scene.

From its Texas setting, the story will move to Australia where the "Sudden Departure" phenomenon is expected to finally be resolved. In an interview, Rev. Matt Jamison's portrayer Christopher Eccleston spoke about the pressure of making the last season and how the story will move forward. "We're never going to be giving answers about whether it was a religious thing or whether it was a natural phenomenon," he explained (via Enstarz). "We're not interested in that. What we're interested in is the journey of the characters and where they end. Where do they end emotionally? Of course, they won't end. They will kind of do what we all do: They'll hit another stage of life, and they'll either go on or they won't."

"The Leftovers" season 3 is set to premiere in 2017 on HBO, but the network has yet to announce an exact release date.
