The third and final season of HBO's hit series "The Leftovers" is expected to arrive later this year. While the fans of the popular TV show are excited to know what will happen to their favorite characters, "The Leftovers" showrunner stated that Season 3 will be taking a whole new different route from the previous two seasons.

It is not known up to what extent will the third season be different from the show's first chapters. However, it is clear that "The Leftovers" will be picking up after the events of the Season 2 finale and follow the story of the Garveys once again along with their extended family.

In an interview with Slash Film, showrunner Damon Lindelof revealed that while the second season of "The Leftovers" is focused on geography, the upcoming Season 3 is going to be something the fans have never seen before in the show. The follow-up chapter of the successful TV program based on Tom Perotta's book of the same name will be "entirely different." Also, Lindelof said that planning the best ending for Season 3 is something they really have to think about.

"Where are we going to end it? What's the last episode of this series going to be? We'll design the entire season basically building up to that moment. I think there was a very purposeful circularity between seasons one and two, with the 'wherever you go, there you are' theme of it all," Lindelof stated.

He also revealed that they have treated all season of "The Leftovers" like individual sets of stories which can stand on its own. The storytelling from seasons 1 to 3 is pretty much like how Perotta wrote the original books as separate novels and they are not meant to comprise of trilogy.

"I'll be honest with you, that idea—this could be the end—was never articulated. I think we want to design every season of The Leftovers as a novel, as opposed to a piece in a trilogy. After the first season ended, I really felt like that was it. I thought, Okay, we've now adapted Tom's novel, and we ended it the exact same way Tom's novel did," he added.

To recap, the second season of "The Leftovers" opened with the Garveys moving to a place called "Miracle" in Jarden, Texas as they believed that it would be a safe haven. However, it was revealed as the season progressed that the place was not spared from the "Departure," thus finding themselves in a tough situation where the only safe haven they could find is in the arms of the people they care about.
