TNT's post-apocalyptic drama "The Last Ship" will keep on sailing after the network recently extended its renewal through season 5.

The series was initially renewed for a fourth season last month, which is set to air on 2017. TNT recently greenlit yet another season for the hit series, extending the renewal through a fifth run expected to premiere on 2018. Seasons 4 and 5 will each span 10 episodes and they will be shot back-to-back. Executive producers/series creators Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane will still serve as showrunners for season 4, but Kane will be the sole showrunner come season 5.

"The Last Ship has taken viewers on an exciting ride through three truly thrilling seasons," Executive vice president of original programming for TNT Sarah Aubrey said in a press statement. "We look forward to watching the cast and production team ratchet up the drama, action and suspense even more over the next two seasons through summer 2018."

In the show's current third season, the ratings reach an average of 7.1 million viewers per episode across various platforms. Due to its good performance, the program even ranks as one of basic cable's Top 10 summer dramas among adults aged 18-49.

Starring Eric Dane, Adam Baldwin and Bridget Regan, "The Last Ship" follows a story based on William Brinkley's popular 1988 novel of the same name. It centers on the aftermath of a worldwide catastrophe that nearly wiped out all humanity. After the huge disaster, CNO Captain Tom Chandler (Dane) and the rest of his crew must now confront the reality of their new world.

The renewal news comes just a few days after the network said goodbye to its long-running procedural drama "Rizzoli & Isles." " The Last Ship" joins TNT's lineup of original programs including "Major Crimes," The Librarians," "Animal Kingdom" and "Murder in the First."

Catch the season 3 finale of "The Last Ship" on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 9 p.m. EST on TNT.
