"The Last Ship" kicked off its third season with an action-packed premiere, and more interesting twists are up ahead as the show moves forward to episode 3.

To provide a short recap, the special two-part premiere revealed the unfortunate fate of fan-favorite Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra). Rachel was able to find a cure for the widespread virus which almost wiped out the whole human population, but as it turned out, she died after being shot in the season 2 finale. There was also an intense and bloody encounter after a group of pirates tried to steal the cure from the crew of the USS Nathan James. Mike eventually realized that they were outmatched, so the bandits got him and five other crew members.

As noted by Carter Matt, the upcoming episode will see the prisoners of war finally finding out the pirates' motive for holding them in captivity. The official synopsis for episode 3 titled "Shanzhar" reads:

"Chandler and crew race to find answers in an Asian Dodge City. Slattery begins to unravel the truth about his troubling predicament."

In an interview with Buddy TV, executive Hank Steinberg hinted that darker episodes are in store for viewers."It's a dangerous world out there," he said. "The way we keep the audience on their toes, we have to lose people along the way to feel like every time they go out there, you don't know what could happen. We've had to lose some of our favorite characters and favorite actors in the process, but it's what keeps the show appealing and feeling real."

Actor Adam Baldwin also gave a clue as to what the future holds for his character Mike Slattery, saying: "In the political realm, our illustrious Captain Chandler gets bumped up to Chief of Naval Operations and someone has to step up and take control of the Nathan James and it's me [Mike Slattery]. It's pretty short-lived because of the things that happen, but we return to it."

Keep tuning in to "The Last Ship" season 3 which airs every Sunday night 9 p.m. EST on TNT.
