'The Last of Us 2' release date, news & update: Naughty Dog to develop sequel in the near future

After years of waiting, fans of Naughty Dog's action-adventure survival video game will be able to play a new version of the title. The developers recently confirmed that they plan on creating "The Last of Us 2."
Reports said the studio still doesn't have concrete plans for the sequel; hence, the game won't be released anytime soon.
In an interview with creative director Neil Druckmann last July, The Frame learned that it took the developers three years to create the first game. If the developers are not yet working on its sequel, then gamers might have to wait a few more years for it.
It seems like Naughty Dog is taking its time to create projects for this franchise. When asked about the status of "The Last of Us" feature film, Druckmann said that he is a writer for the film and that it hasn't progressed in the past few years.
Reports said the studio will finish its downloadable content (DLC) for "Uncharted 4" before it proceeds to work on the sequel for "The Last of Us."
One of the reasons for the delay reportedly has to do with legal matters for "Uncharted 4." The studio will have to complete intellectual property rights for the title after the DLC is launched, reports said. Another rumor suggested that the developers are currently waiting for new consoles to launch.
Moreover, artists for "The Last of Us 2" are reportedly pushing for a major overhaul that has to do with mixing and adding new elements that will leave a lasting impression. Speaking to The Frame, Druckmann reportedly said the game will feature racially diverse characters. In addition, an LGBT character will be added to the game.
The developers still haven't announced a release date but recent speculations suggest that "The Last of Us 2" will launch in 2020 or 2021. Meanwhile, official announcements and updates about the upcoming game won't be expected until 2018.
