'The Last of Us 2' release date news update: Game sequel still expected: Ellie to be solo lead?

Naughty Dog has not released any official statements regarding the supposed sequel of "The Last of US," but many fans still tuned in to the recently concluded Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016 earlier this month to check for the game sequel updates. Unfortunately, the game developer company did not drop any confirmation of "The Last of Us" sequel, although the rumors are still rife that Naughty Dog will be pushing through with the game project in the coming years. In fact, there are speculations that Ellie, one of the lead characters in "The Last of Us," will be the solo lead character in the highly anticipated sequel.

Many have noticed that Naughty Dog has already placed some hints on their other popular video game regarding the future of "The Last of Us" game series. Specifically, the game studio put an Easter egg on a particular scene in "Uncharted 4" where a pregnant woman with a gas mask is seen in a wall poster. The woman actually looks like Ellie and according to the rumors, the poster is a glimpse of what to expect in "The Last of Us 2." Moreover, this suggests that Ellie might be the sole focus of the upcoming game sequel.

The developers of "The Last of Us" have also posted a teaser on Twitter last May regarding the features of the sequel. The statement revealed that Ellie will be the only focus of "The Last of Us 2" as far as the storyline and plot development of the new installment are concerned.

It can be noted that Ellie is the only human survivor immune to the deadly virus that has turned the entire world into a wasteland full of mutated zombie-like beings. If this were the case, then "The Last of Us 2" will possibly tackle Ellie's immunity to the virus and find ways to use this immunity to eradicate the infection.

Regarding the release date, most people speculate that 2018 might be the year when Naughty Dog is ready to drop "The Last of Us 2." However, the final word will always come from the game studio.
