Fox's hit comedy "The Last Man on Earth" debuted its third season with some unexpected plot twists and a surprise celebrity cameo.

After spotting unknown intruders on the beach back in the season 2 finale, Tandy (Will Forte), Carol (Kristen Schaal), Melissa (January Jones), Todd (Mel Rodriguez), Erica (Cleopatra Coleman) and Gail (Mary Steenburgen) immediately panicked and began preparing for combat.

Season 3 kicked off with the Malibu crew still under siege by those three armed individuals, forcing them to make some hasty decisions. Overwhelmed by the fight-or-flight situation and with nowhere else to go, the group decides to fight the strangers wearing hazmat suits. During the fight, Melissa fatally shot one of the armed men, who turned out to be Jon Hamm. Aside from being a significant moment for Melissa, it was also a special moment for "Mad Men" fans.

For the uninitiated, Hamm and Melissa's portrayer Jones played husband and wife in AMC's "Mad Men." Their characters Betty and Don Draper struggled with a strained relationship up until the series ended back in 2015, and "The Last Man on Earth's" premiere somewhat gave closure for "Mad Men" fans.

Leading man Forte recently caught up with Den of Geek, and he shared some interesting teasers on what's next for the series."We're still charting the course for the season. We don't like to get too comfortable in one situation, so there could be a change of scenery," he said.

According to Forte, the writers and creators are currently working on some fun ideas for the upcoming episodes. Similar to the season 2 appendicitis situation, which gave the comedy  more serious tone, fans can expect storylines exploring real-life problems. "We have something that's quite different than that, but in the same territory," he continued. "You know, maybe a little more on the dramatic side, approaching it from a more real point of view."

"The Last Man on Earth" season 3 airs every Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. EST on Fox.
