'The Last Man on Earth' season 3 news: Could elevator be Gail's final resting place?
Midseason finales very rarely end on a positive note, and FOX's post-apocalyptic comedy series, "The Last Man on Earth," is no exception. Since the last time the show ended on a cliffhanger with a person's life on the line, could the show's spring comeback repeat the tragedy of the previous year?
In her search for a reprieve from her newly adopted daughter, Carol Pilbasian (Kristen Schaal), Gail Klosterman (Mary Steenburgen) ended getting trapped in an elevator in a building annex that no one has thought of visiting just yet. With only her booze, snacks, and the mutilated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) dummy Gordon to keep her company, Gail's chance of survival had steadily been growing thinner. Then there's that foreboding gunshot that ended yet another midseason in a cliffhanger that left a character's fate up in the air.
In an interview with Den of Geek for its "The Fourth Wall" feature, Erik Durbin, who co-wrote season 3 episode 9 with actor and series creator Will Forte, shared that they had always known how Gail's elevator storyline was going to end. Well-known television writer Andy Bobrow, who has also written several episodes for the series, added that the final moment that capped off the midseason had been in Forte's head, and that they had never really considered any other option.
"We were scared of it, that's for sure," Bobrow said, adding, "But as writers, you rarely get a chance to do stuff that scares you so we kind of had to go for it."
For a show that never backs away from the stark reality of the characters' situation and the consequences of their actions, could the writers be referring to a not so favorable midseason premiere where Gail's life is concerned? Will the Malibu survivors be mourning her death when the show's third season returns in spring next year, much like they did for the other Phil Miller's (Boris Kodjoe) passing in season 2? Or will Fate be a little kinder to her this time around?
"The Last Man on Earth" season 3 episode 10 will be airing sometime in spring 2017.
