North Korean hackers reportedly broke into Sony's network recently, stealing films and then threatening theaters that would show the "The Interview," a controversial Sony-produced movie about a plot to assassinate North Korean King Jong Un.

The series of events led Sony to cancel the release of the film. Later, some suggested that Sony could potentially release the movie on YouTube, while BitTorrent has also offered to help distribute the movie in 2015.

Sony said the cancellation came about because several theaters declined to show the film after the hacker group "Guardians Of Peace" threatened to harm theater audiences. President Obama and the general public criticized Sony for its decision even as support for the showing of the movie in public intensified.

After Sony claimed that theater chains refused to screen "The Interview," the Art House Convergence -- a group of 250 art house theaters -- offered to screen the movie to prove the company wrong. A representative for the theater group even posted a petition on Change.org asking theater owners to publicly pledge to distribute and show the movie.

Since then BitTorrent has also provided Sony with the option to release the movie on its publishing platform where Sony can sell the film for a price, so that people can pay and download it securely.

The New York Times has reported that Sony planned to release the film for free through its own "Crackle" streaming service.

While this has not been confirmed by Sony, the number of options that the company can now use to distribute and show the film has increased exponentially, giving it very little excuse to stop the films' release.

Many people have made it pretty clear that they want to see "The Interview" and have given it high ratings even though they have not seen even a scene from it. On IMDB the movie earned a perfect score of 10.

Although the movie's original release date of Christmas Day 2014 has been canceled, it is believed that once Sony can confirm how it wants to distribute the movie, it will announce a new date some time early in 2015.
