'The Good Wife' season 7 finale spoilers, plot news: Alicia and Peter to divorce? EPs talk about almost killing a major character and the show's legacy

CBS' popular legal drama "The Good Wife" season 7 will come to a close this week, and the finale will also mark the end of the series.

As all good things are bound to end, fans hope that their favorite show will conclude on a positive note. According to reports, the finale will feature Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) having a serious talk with her husband Peter, asking him on when was the last time they were happy in their relationship. After staying by her husband's side for seven years, Alicia's decision to divorce Peter is not something viewers would expect. Peter will have to face some troubles on his own as well because he will reportedly face jail again. However, it remains unclear if he is innocent or guilty of the crime.

Meanwhile, showrunners Robert King and Michelle King recently caught up with Vulture to discuss the series finale. Robert King even admitted that they almost killed one of the Florrick children halfway through season 7. "Midway through the seven seasons we thought Alicia had to experience some tragedy," he said. "We didn't know whether Chris Noth wanted to go on with the series, so Chris's character, Peter, was one of the people on the targeted list of who we might kill. If that didn't work out we were going to possibly move to one of the kids. What we felt was every life has some major tragedy in it. We didn't want death of the week or even death of the year but we wanted to have something that really threw Alicia off the game. As soon as she felt like she had the handle on life, life just threw something at her like that."

In terms of what legacy the show will leave, Michelle King stated that it would have to be Margulies' "spectacular" acting. "It just never dipped," she described the actress' performance. "She constantly found new things about the character and made her more complex as Alicia became more complex."

The last episode of "The Good Wife" airs on Wednesday, May 8 on CBS.
