'The Get Down' Netflix premiere date news 2016: Series gets mostly positive reviews; Creator Baz Luhrmann weighs in on show's pricey production

"The Get Down" recently premiered its first season with mostly positive reviews and despite being notoriously over budget, creator Baz Luhrmann clarified that it is not the most expensive TV show ever.
During the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Luhrmann addressed reports claiming that his latest project is the costliest series in the industry with its rumored $120 million overall budget. "I heard The Crown was the most expensive show ever made, that's what someone told me," Luhrmann told The Hollywood Reporter. "Yes, it took longer and it's been more difficult than I imagined. As for the number, it wasn't cheap. But I don't think it's the most expensive show. I think it's on the high end of storytelling."
Set in New York City during the 1970s, the 12-episode musical drama follows a rag-tag crew of teenagers from the South Bronx who are considered as nobodies with nowhere to call home. Told through the eyes of the young promising kids, the riveting tale features how the Big Apple at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to disco, punk and hip-hop — changing the world forever.
The streaming giant has yet to air the second half of the series due to a production delay. Aside from the immense amount of detail needed to polish every scene, Luhrmann says having young lead characters is a huge challenge because they have to allot time for school. Even though it's too early to tell if Netflix will greenlight a renewal, Luhrmann already has some ideas for the show's future.
"A second season would be the '80s," he continued. "On a creative level, it would be wildly exciting. ...a second season would be a good thing, but it has to be done in a way in which there's no dropping quality."
The first six episodes of "The Get Down" is currently available for streaming on Netflix, while the next six episodes will be launched at a later date.
