'The Fosters' season 4 spoilers, plot news: Two-part special premiere to feature a distressing school shooting

Season 4 kicks off with a two-part special premiere later this month, and the episodes will feature a dramatic school shooting. The story picks up right after the season 3 finale when Nick (Louis Hunter) saw his girlfriend Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) locking lips with another guy. In his anger, he brings a gun to school for revenge leading a Special Weapons Attack Team (SWAT) to put Anchor Beach on lockdown.

Since the show will be featuring a real-life problem currently plaguing the country, executive producer Joanna Johnson shared her opinion on the upcoming episode and why it is relevant to the viewers. "It's really pretty harrowing," Johnson told TV Guide. "It's something that's happening so much it's almost becoming normal. It almost seems like a weekly occurrence that someone is taking a gun to school. We wanted to explore what the impact of this has on our schools and has on our kids."

The suspenseful event will definitely carry over to future episodes, and Nick will have to face the consequences of what he did. "The first two episodes of the season a different look and a different feel. We're trying to push the envelope of the vibe of our show," the EP added. "It's very intense and dramatic and I'm really proud of these episodes."

Following the distressing drama, the students are all cleared so they head home safely. However, tensions still run high when they go home, and the family continues to stick together as they try to move forward.
