'The Flash' season 3 cast news: Tom Cavanagh returning as series regular? New season will be 'way different'
While Barry's (Grant Gustin) actions during the season 2 finale of The CW's "The Flash" appeared to have put the fate of Tom Cavanagh's Wells in question, an insider now says that the actor will be back next season as a series regular.

According to Entertainment Weekly's Spoiler Room, while details about "The Flash" season 3 are being kept under wraps, Cavanagh is confirmed to be back in the upcoming season. The report states that should "The Flash" tell the "Flashpoint" story in season 3, then the Reverse-Flash would never have killed Earth-1 Wells nor his wife, which then means that Wells will be in the next season.
Alternatively, should the superhero series not move forward with "Flashpoint," it could then delve deeper into Earth-2, where Wells and Jesse (Violett Beane) had returned during the season 2 finale. The new season could show Wells attempting to fix the timeline, which was disrupted by Barry, giving Cavanagh more screen time. Whether or not he appears as his Earth-1 or Earth-2 version, it does seem as though Wells could be sticking around for another season of "The Flash."
Meanwhile, "The Flash" actor Carlos Valdes recently dropped what is being taken as a major hint that the new season of The CW's popular series could be a "Flashpoint"-centric one.
In a recent appearance at MegaCon, Carlos spoke about the upcoming season, which is set to begin filming this summer.
"All I'm going to tell you is things are going to be different, way different," the actor said. "Not in a bad way; I think in a really exciting way, and it's that difference that's going to inform Barry's trajectory throughout the season, and I think people are going to like it."
According to Comic Book, this could mean that Barry/The Flash may have broken time when he attempted to save his mother from being killed by the Reverse-Flash in the season 2 finale. Following that event, fans of the show are speculating that the series will take on the "Flashpoint" story, a five-issue miniseries from 2011 in which Barry finds himself in an alternate timeline populated by dark versions of the people he knows.
"The Flash" season 3 begins production in July and is expected to return to The CW in October.
