'The Flash' season 2 finale spoilers: Early season 3 plot rumors arise

"The Flash" season 2 finale episode, titled "The Race of His Life," will witness titular hero Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) trying to manage grief over his father Henry Allen's (John Wesley Shipp) murder while taking on the mission of taking down Zoom (Teddy Sears) in a final race.

While there are still several more days to count before the airing of the season finale, viewers are already looking into what the next season will have to offer.

It is not certain which recurring characters will be returning for the third season but the central squad characters will be reprising their roles, namely, Carlos Valdes as tech genius Cisco, Danielle Panabaker as science master Caitlin, Candice Patton as the news-hunting Iris, and Jesse L. Martin as the dutiful patriarch Joe.

Several crossovers with other DC series are also expected to happen. Green Arrow (Stephen Amell), Atom (Brandon Routh) and other members of Team Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow might drop by the world of "The Flash." Fans also expressed their hope to see Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) grace the show.

When it comes to villains, the two seasons of the show have established the pattern of having many minor antagonists for Team Flash to handle on a rather regular basis. However, there are no super-villains named just yet and season 3 might make a major villain central in the plotline.

"The Flash" season 3 will also look to dip more deeply into Caitlin's character and background as executive producer Andrew Kreisberg told Collider in an interview. So far, Caitlin has not shown any signs of metahuman powers and was proven negative of metahuman genes through a test she executed on herself. However, it has been revealed that she and her Earth-2 doppelganger have seemingly more in common than Caitlin would admit.

Kreisberg then remarked about this: "It gave us an opportunity to deepen both characters. We haven't met Caitlin's mother yet. We got a little talk between the two women, which will probably play out in Season 3." "The Flash" season 3 might also answer the whispers about Caitlin's fate to become Killer Frost.

Although it is still too far out to know exactly when The CW will bring "The Flash" back for season 3, it will likely premiere in the last quarter of the year.
