"The Blacklist" season 4 is returning to the small screen in September, and according to the show's executive producer, the upcoming season's plot would hinge greatly on the cliffhanger of an episode that marked season 3's end.

It would be recalled that Liz (Megan Boone) and Mr. Kaplan (Susan Blommaert) staged the former's fake death towards the end of season 3. Liz cooked up the plan so she could live a normal life with her daughter and husband Tom (Ryan Eggold) away from Raymond "Red" Reddington (James Spader). However, her plans took a turn for the worse when Alexander Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen) forced his way into the picture.

Red tried to save Liz but he got there late, and with Kirk announcing that he is Liz's biological father, things between Red and Liz only got complicated. With Liz wanting to keep her distance from Red, it would be difficult for Red to help her. Nevertheless, "The Blacklist" creator Jon Bokenkamp said Red would never abandon Liz.

"I can't imagine him abandoning Liz," he told Entertainment Weekly. "She hurt him, but we often hurt the people we love. The fact he's been hurt isn't nearly enough for him to walk away."

Latest spoilers for the show suggest that Liz would find it difficult facing problems on her own now that she opted to steer clear of Red. Red would be more than willing to extend his help, but in an interview, Boone said Liz would reject Red's offer.

"A stronger Liz will suffer the consequences of extricating him from her life, rather than wish for him to rescue her again," she told EW. "That's not to say he won't, just that I think she's become braver and not a damsel in distress. I think she's learned a lot and is able to fight for herself now."

Boone further said her character would trace her relationship with Red, but she wouldn't turn to him for answers since she knows he won't disclose the truth.

What is the real connection between Liz and Red? Would they be able to repair their damaged relationship? These questions will be answered when "The Blacklist" season 4 premieres on Sept. 22 on NBC.
