'The Blacklist' season 4 spoilers: Alexander Kirk not coming back; Red and Mr. Kaplan coming face to face?

After featuring Alexander Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen) as the main villain, "The Blacklist" season 4 will move to a new direction once the back half of the series returns next year.
Last week's midseason finale wrapped up with a lot of loose ends, with Kirk still determined to end Red's (James Spader) life. Just when he was about to kill him, Red whispered something to Kirk that stopped him in his tracks. Although the series ended with a cliffhanger, executive producer Jon Bokenkamp revealed that Kirk's story arc is over.
"You'll see a new, really compelling story start to bubble up very shortly," he told Entertainment Weekly's Spoiler Room. "Actually, when I think about it, maybe the seeds for this new story were planted some time ago."
As for what Red actually whispered to Kirk before the fall finale concluded, Bokenkamp has some bad news for the anticipating fans. "The truth is, we're not going to find out what he said," he continued. "That whisper was a secret between the two men who loved Katarina. Besides, if you really knew what Red said the show would probably be over."
On another note, Mr. Kaplan (Susan Blommaert) was last seen escaping from the woods and running away. This led fans to believe that Mr. Kaplan and Red might reunite when the series returns. In the earlier part of season 4, Red and Mr. Kaplan got involved in a vehicular accident while trying to get away from Kirk's men. Red assumed Mr. Kaplan died that day and they never saw each other since. In an interview with TV Guide, Bokenkamp admitted he still doesn't know if the two characters will cross paths at some point.
"Well, I don't know that Red will discover she's alive. Mr. Kaplan barely escapes with her life and she's just lucky to be alive," the EP explained. "I think she has every intention to disappear into the night."
The fourth season of "The Blacklist" returns Thursday, January 5 on NBC.
