'The Big Bang Theory' season 10 spoilers, plot news: Mary and Alfred an item in upcoming season?

CBS' long-running sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" recently capped off its ninth season with a clever and slightly scandalous new coupling.

What does \"The Big Bang Theory season 9\" finale with Alfred (Judd Hirsch) and Mary\'s (Laurie Metcalf) surprise ending mean for their sons as the show approaches season 10? | CBS

In the season 9 finale, Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) agreed to host a formal wedding ceremony to appease Leonard's mother, Beverly (Christine Baranski). The event brought together Leonard's missing-in-action and long-awaited father, Alfred (Judd Hirsch) and Sheldon's (Jim Parsons) devout Christian mother, Mary (Laurie Metcalf).

Mary and Alfred, both unattached, unexpectedly took a liking to each other and bonded during the night-before dinner, eventually leaving together for a nightcap at their hotel. At the end of the finale, both Sheldon and Leonard were left with the uneasy realization that their respective parents were in the same hotel (and possibly the same bed) and both had turned off their phones.

With the finale having left viewers off on a major cliffhanger, fans are now wondering whether or not the possible Mary-Alfred coupling could lead to something more in the upcoming tenth season of "The Big Bang Theory." Should Mary and Alfred become an item, Sheldon and Leonard would technically become brothers. But would either of them appreciate the fact that their parents are a couple?

"It is weirdly approaching that at the moment, isn't it?" showrunner Steve Molaro told The Hollywood Reporter. "But aren't they kind of brothers already? I think it's a weird thing to think about their parents together. I'm fond of my parents, but I don't want to think about what they're doing in the bedroom!"

The "Big Bang Theory" boss also spoke about what fans can expect when season 10 debuts, saying that the first episode will pick up right where the season 9 finale left off.

"The plan for now, and it's not set in stone, is that we're coming right back into the situation that was created the night before [with their nightcap]," he said.

"Barring a catastrophic scheduling issue, that's what we are shooting for," Molaro told TVLine.

"The Big Bang Theory" returns with its tenth season later this year.
