After airing four seasons, FX's "The Americans" has proven itself as one of the best dramas on TV. With still a year until the show returns to the small screen, co-showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields recently shared details on what lies ahead in season 5.

Speaking with Collider during the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fields says viewers will see "many things come to a head that were set in motion, at the beginning." He confirmed that Frank Langella and Margo Martindale will both reprise their roles as Gabriel and Claudia, but there are still a lot of new parts that have yet to be cast. Fields also hinted that something "interesting" will happen to Stan (Noah Emmerich) and he will have a new relationship.

As for Paige's (Holly Taylor) relationship with her parents, Weisberg mentioned that there will be some tension between her and her parents. Season 4 left off with her finally discovering that her parents are spies working for the Soviet Union and it might be related to the new complication Weisberg is referring to.

Paige's younger brother Henry (Keidrich Sellati) is the sole member of the Jennings family who is still unaware of his parents' double lives. Fields believes that keeping him in the dark is both easy and difficult. Since the family wants to protect the last member who does not know about the dangerous secret, they had to cut him out for his security.

The series has been renewed for two seasons and is scheduled to conclude on 2018. In an interview with The New York Times, lead actress Keri Russell shared the ending she had in mind. "I kept hoping they would consider the idea of turning, like going to the F.B.I. and becoming double agents for the safety of their family," she said.

"The Americans" season 5 is expected to premiere next year but the network has yet to announce an official release date.
