Taylor Swift News 2015: Swift Makes $50,000 Initial Donation to New York Public Schools

Taylor Swift has made good on her promise to donate the proceeds of her "Welcome to New York" campaign to public schools in the Big Apple.
The New York City Department of Education confirmed that the "Blank Space" singer has given an initial donation of $50,000.
Devora Kaye, press secretary of the Department of Education in New York, confirmed Swift's donation in an official statement.
"We're deeply appreciative of this kind gesture to donate her proceeds of the single 'Welcome to New York' to benefit NYC public schools," Kaye said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Swift's cash gift initially triggered online criticism when the city Education Department mistakenly announced that the donation would be a one-shot deal.
But the department quickly changed its tune, saying Swift would continue to donate proceeds to the city's public schools, although it was unclear how much more.
A representative from Swift's camp assured that the $50,000 will not be a one-time donation.
"Taylor will continue to donate the proceeds she receives from the sale of the single 'Welcome to New York' to NYC public schools," the rep said, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Back in October, the 25-year-old singer-songwriter announced that she would donate all proceeds from "Welcome to New York" to the city's public schools during her appearance on "The View."
She made the pledge after Swift was named the city's Global Welcome Ambassador for tourists.
Swift moved to New York in 2014 after purchasing a $20-million penthouse apartment in Tribeca.
"Welcome to New York" is on Swift's "1989" album, which has sold more than 4 million copies.
The Recording Industry Association of America said the song was a certified gold, which means it sold more than 500,000 copies in the U.S.
