Taylor Swift New Album Sales News: '1989' Sells 1.2 Million In Its First Week
Taylor Swift's fifth studio album "1989" sold around 1.287 million copies during the first week of its release, according to Nielsen SoundScan based from its Nov. 4 report.
Thanks to "1989," Swift is now the first artist ever to have three consecutive albums selling more than a million copies each in their first week of release. Her "Speak Now" album in 2010 sold for 1.407 million, while her 2012 album "Red" sold for 1.208 million.
"1989" is also the first album in 2014 that has sold more than a million copies.
Swift tweeted about her new record sales saying "industry experts predicted 1989 would sell 650k first week. You went and bought 1.287 million albums."
Swift's album sales came close to the records set by singer Britney Spears. She also came close to beating out rapper Eminem.
Swift also came close to snatching the record from Spears, who currently holds the record of most records sales by a female artist, after selling 1.319 million copies of her 2000 album "Oops! ...I Did It Again" in one week.
"1989" also has the largest sales week for any album since 2002, which is when Eminem released his album "Eminem Show," with 1.322 million copies sold in a week.
"I don't think I've ever seen anything that high a share of the total market all by itself," Nielsen SoundScan analyst David Bakula said.
"She's an incredible anomaly like no other artist," said Keith Caulfield, Billboard's associate editor of charts/sales.
In line with promotions for "1989," Swift also announced a world tour during an interview on Good Morning America. "The 1989 World Tour" will kick off in Louisiana on May 20, 2015 and will take place in eight countries across four continents, North America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
