'Switched at Birth' season 5 news, release date: Production on final season wraps up; season 5 debuts January 2017?

While filming on the fifth and final season of Freeform's "Switched at Birth" has reportedly wrapped up, fans will have to wait until next year to find out what happens to Daphne (Katie Leclerc), Bay (Vanessa Marano), and the Sorrento and Kennish families.
When season 4 of the teen/family drama concluded in October 2015, Daphne and Bay were called home from China due to an emergency. While there has been much speculation about what this emergency is all about, very few details have been revealed about the upcoming season and viewers will just have to wait until 2017 for the answer.
Although the exact premiere date has not been announced, the International Business Times suggests that the new season could debut on either Jan. 1 or Jan. 8, 2017.
Based on social media posts from the series' cast members, production on the much-anticipated final season has already wrapped. In April, Leclerc posted an Instagram photo of herself with the main cast members of "Switched at Birth," captioning it, "These are my favorite people ever on our final day of filming."

Last week, "Switched at Birth" creator Lizzy Weiss announced that they had locked the final episode of the series.
"The finale of #SwitchedatBirth is now locked," she captioned a Twitter snap. "As I drive off from Santa Clarita, a final shot of the writers' bldg."
Other social media snaps from the "Switched at Birth" set include those of the cast goofing off and making funny faces at the camera and one of baby Carlton, the infant son of Tobby (Lucas Grabeel) and Lily (Rachel Shenton).
According to IBT, Carlton could be at the heart of the season 5 story, with many speculating that he is the reason for Daphne and Bay's sudden return home.
Weiss confirmed that the upcoming season 5 will be the final run of "Switched at Birth" back in March. The "Switched at Birth" boss announced the news on Twitter, saying: "This season of #SwitchedatBirth will be our final one. We are ending the show after an amazing 103 episodes with pride, love, and gratitude."
The fifth and final season of "Switched at Birth" will air in 2017.
