Big changes are afoot on The CW's long-running fantasy horror series "Supernatural."

When the popular series returns with its twelfth season later this year, it will begin airing at a new time slot with two new showrunners at its helm.

According to TVLine, showrunner Jeremy Carver, who also serves as a writer and a producer for the series, has passed on his duties to two new showrunners.

After three seasons as showrunner, Carver stepped down at the end of "Supernatural" season 11 to work on his new thriller for The CW. The show, which was ordered to series last month, is titled "Frequency." Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb will replace Carver as co-showrunners for the next season of "Supernatural." This will be the first time that the veteran series will have two showrunners at the same time.

While the new co-showrunning team may be making some fans of "Supernatural" anxious about the show's future, TVLine says that both Singer and Dabb are experts in their field.

Singer has been with the show since season 1, serving as executive producer, writer and director. Dabb began working on "Supernatural" as a writer/story editor in season 4 and eventually made his way up to executive producer. Meanwhile, former showrunner Carver joined "Supernatural" as a scriptwriter in season 3. He left the show at the end of season 5 to work on the Syfy series "Being Human" and returned as a showrunner in season 8.

While the promotion of Singer and Dabb as co-showrunners probably won't mean much in terms of changing the show's format, Bustle reports that the series could soon evolve and possibly spawn a spinoff.

According to The CW president Mark Pedowitz, while the network has no plans for a spinoff just yet, it is open to the possibility.

As for the "Supernatural" cast, Movie News Guide reports that Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, the stars of the show, will stay on.

"Both Jared and Jensen are having a blast, and as long as they have a blast, it's a great thing," Pedowitz told Variety earlier this year. "If they can keep delivering stories, and the numbers keep holding, and the guys want to do it, we're going to try to keep going."

When "Supernatural" airs its season premiere this fall, it will do so at the new time slot of Thursday nights at 9 p.m ET.
