"Supernatural" left off with the Winchester brothers being arrested by the Secret Service, but some fans are not convinced that the government is responsible for throwing them behind bars. However, the show's executive producer recently shut down fan theories blaming the British Men of Letters for the mystery-solving duo's imprisonment.

The show's midseason finale saw Lucifer taking up residence in the body of the U.S. President, using his new vessel to get rid of Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles). Towards the episode's end, the Winchesters were arrested by the Secret Service as ordered by Lucifer posing as the POTUS.

In an interview with TV Line, executive producer Andrew Dabb clarified that the government was really behind their unexpected arrest. However, similar to Mary (Samantha Smith) and Castiel (Misha Collins), the British Men of Letters are "going to have a very specific reaction" to the duo's predicament.

Aside from Sam and Dean's fight against the King of Hell, the back half of season 12 will also delve deeper into Castiel's backstory. "Two Weeks Notice" actress Alicia Witt has been tapped to join the series and she will play the role of Lily Sunder, an important person from Castiel's past.

"Castiel was part of the battalion that was watching Earth. He was the guy that harrowed Hell to rescue Dean Winchester. We established that, and now we're taking a little twist on it and telling a lost story from his past that involves Alicia Witt," Dabb went on to say. The EP previously promised fans three "Cas-heavy" episodes up ahead, which apparently is a concerted effort by the writers and creators to give the fan-favorite character his due after being absent for the most part of the season's first half.

The 12th season of "Supernatural" returns on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
