'Supernatural' season 12 release date, spoilers news update: New sneak peak featuring events after season 11 cliffhanger revealed, musician Rick Springfield joins cast
The Winchester brothers will continue their fight against evil when "Supernatural" season 12 returns this Fall, and a new cast member recently joined to play the role of Lucifer's next vessel.
During the show's panel at the San Diego Comic-Con event held last Sunday, executive producers Bob Singer and Andrew Dabb confirmed that musician Rick Springfield has been cast as one of Lucifer's new vessels named Vince Vicente. The character is described as a "washed-up aging rock star" and he will appear in the first few episodes of season 12. Springfield is currently in Vancouver filming for his stint in the show.
"Lucifer got what he wanted last season, his face-to-face with God [Rob Benedict]. Now he's out in the world. We see Lucifer on vacation and he wants to have fun," Dabb explained. "This is a real role. Great actors have played this before like Mark Pelligrino and Misha Collins a little bit, so we needed someone who could act. Most rock stars can only sing and very few can act. If you've seen Ricki and The Flash or True Detective recently, he's really great."
A sneak peek video was also presented during the event featuring scenes after the season 11 cliffhanger. Dean (Jensen Ackles) is shocked after finding his long-gone mother Mary (Samantha Smith) in the woods, still alive and wearing the nightgown she died in when he was just a small boy. He asked if what he's seeing is real, but instead of answering, she wrestled him to the ground.
The clip also showed scenes of Sam (Jared Padalecki) being tortured by the British Men of Letters and Castiel (Misha Collins) in a bloody fight. Dean re-appeared as he was being held at gunpoint as the trailer ended with Mary's voice in the background saying, "I never wanted this for you and Sam."
