'Stranger Things' season 2 spoilers, plot news: Series creators hint 'bigger mythology,' plot to focus on new problem

Eighties-inspired horror sci-fi series "Stranger Things" easily became a summer hit when its first season premiered last month. The 8-episode run definitely left fans wanting for more but what can everyone expect when the sophomore season hits the small screen?
Prior to a season renewal from Netflix, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer a.k.a. The Duffer Brothers already shared some of their plans on how season 2 will play out. "We hint at where we might go at the end of the season," Matt Duffer told Entertainment Weekly. "Will was living in this Upside-Down, this other dimension, for about a week, so the repercussions of that can't be good. [The] inter-dimensional rift is still very much open, so that also can't be good... There's a bigger mythology behind what happened. It's open-ended in a way that if people wanted it, if Netflix wanted it, we could explore and continue this storyline."
He further added that the new storyline will center on a main tension. While maintaining the tone laid out in season 1, the upcoming season will have a "different structure" instead of just making everything bigger. "We want it to feel a little bit different," the co-creator explained, "maybe a little bit darker, but still have the sense of fun that we had." Ross Duffer also confirmed that the same cast will be present in season 2 to flesh out their characters even more.
"Stranger Things" is quickly gaining popularity and it's only a matter of time before the streaming giant decides to pick it up. However, Netflix chief Ted Sarandos clarified that they are still working on a final decision. "We always want to take some time to be thoughtful on the process," Sarandos said during the TCA press tour. "When we first come out of the gate with something, we have an idea where it's going to go, but it's sensible for us to let the show breathe."
Netflix has yet to renew "Stranger Things" for a second season. Once the network greenlights another run, season 2 will probably air sometime next year.
