'Stranger Things' season 2 spoilers, news: Director reveals storyline theme; 3 new cast members announced

Netflix is adding big names to the stellar cast lineup for "Stranger Things" season 2.
Taking part in the streaming giant's summer hit are Paul Reiser, Sean Astin and Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen. According to reports, Reiser will portray Dr. Owens, a high-ranking member of the Department of Energy who joins the institute's clean-up assignment to deal with last season's events.
Astin has been tapped to play Bob Newby, a compassionate former nerd who went to high school with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour). Years later, he now manages the local RadioShack in Hawkins. Berthelsen is set to play Roman, a young and emotionally damaged woman who experienced a great loss when she was still a child. Compared to the other two characters, she is not originally from Hawkins. However, she is known to have mysterious ties to the supernatural events that occur in the lab.
"Stranger Things" announced the start of production for the upcoming season last week, along with a photo that shows most of the returning cast members. Executive producer Shawn Levy, who also directed some episodes back in season 1, will also come back to direct two more episodes for the new season.
Speaking with Collider, Levy revealed that the second season will center on "the struggle to reclaim normalcy and maybe the impossibility of it." Although the series has yet to return to the airwaves, Levy mentioned they are already thinking of a possible season 3.
"We are not gonna be caught off guard and we don't wanna be making stuff up like the day before we have to write it and make it," he said, "so we are definitely optimistic and we have started thinking ahead."
The director also revealed how he plans to work on every episode with series creators Matt and Ross Duffer. "Yes, we are a little superstitious so just like last year, they're [Matt and Ross Duffer] doing 1 and 2, I'm going in and doing 3 and 4. So the first four are gonna kick off exactly the same as last time... I am going to start prepping right around Thanksgiving and I'll be filming my episodes through December and January," he explained.
The second season of "Stranger Things" premieres early 2017 on Netflix.
