"Steven Universe" creator Rebecca Sugar recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the Emmy-nominated animated series. According to Sugar, while the first few episodes of the new season have focused on the central issues of "Steven Universe," the show is really all about its "light, goofy, human, down-to-Earth" core.

Sugar also spoke about the transformation of Peridot, one of the show's main characters, and hinted at the possibility of releasing a "Steven Universe" album in the future.

In the latest episode of "Steven Universe," titled "Barn Mates," Steven helped Peridot and Lapis Lazuli work out their conflicts. Peridot, once a cold and devious character, has slowly transformed into a rather comic presence in the new season. According to Sugar, Carl Jung's "enantiodromia," the principle that a superabundance of a particular force will eventually bring about its opposite, explains what happened with Peridot.

"It's her obsession with rules and regulations, her belief that things can be one way and one way only, and her unquestioning obedience toward Yellow Diamond that eventually rockets her into becoming a rebel and anarchist when she realizes Yellow Diamond is capable of being wrong," Sugar told EW. "She's excited by the infinite potential of everything, and fascinated by her own capacity to care, because those things had been a total blind spot for her."

Meanwhile, with "Steven Universe" having already expanded into various other kinds of media, including comics, books, and mobile games, are there other platforms that Sugar still wants to explore?

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, the "Steven Universe" boss admitted that she would love to work on something that has to do with music. "I'd love to make an album, that's something I'm always hoping [for]," she said.

"Steven Universe" airs Thursdays at 7 p.m. EDT on Cartoon Network.
