An "entirely musical" third season awaits fans of Cartoon Network's popular series "Steven Universe." Early this month, Rebecca Sugar confirmed that viewers can expect a musical season, given that most of Steven's troubles are resolved through songs.

"We'll usually write premises and outlines [of the songs] so we usually plan for it in an episode — we'll have the broad strokes of in the course of the song, they have to learn this, or they start out feeling this way...we'll have the arc of the song," Sugar said via Moviepilot. Additionally, the cartoon series is reported to premiere a month ahead of its initial release date by kicking off with a month-long special next month.

Originally slated for a June premiere, an exclusive report from Entertainment Weekly confirmed that the third season will return on May. After a long break, the show returns with a "four-week special" event before continuing to the season 3 plot.

The promo clip features the Crystal Gems — Pearl, Garnet, Amethyst and newest member Peridot along with Steven, as they battle it out with Malachite. Viewers know her as the villainous outcome of Lapis Lazuli and Jasper's fusion. She is seen emerging from the bottom of the ocean where she is imprisoned, exclaiming, "I can't wait to tear your gems apart!" The Crystal Gems merge to become Alexandrite, but it remains unclear if they will be able to defeat their hostile enemy.

On another note, danger still looms as the Cluster terrorize the earth, promising to destroy the planet. "Something doesn't feel right about this," Steven says at some point in the clip. following Peridot's effort to contact yellow Diamonds, there are also mystery gem visitors who might be revealed in the upcoming season.

Titled "In Too Deep," the special will feature two back-to-back episodes on May 12, 7 p.m. ET/PT, and will continue with one episode per week throughout the month. It will then be followed by "Summer of Steven" this coming June.
