'Star Wars Rebels' season 3 spoilers update: Darth Maul's return, what does the future hold for Ahsoka?
Popular animated series "Star Wars Rebels" season 2 came to a close last March, and fans are already raving about the upcoming third season of the show.
Reports say that season 3 will feature the arrival of an important character — Darth Maul. Viewers saw the last of him when he got away in season 2, but there are speculations that he will come back to fight with Darth Vader. Before fans get too excited for the epic battle, series co-creator and showrunner David Filoni was quick to shoot down the rumors, saying that it is less likely to happen.
"I wouldn't count on that," he laughs. "What I think is interesting is that Maul has an awareness of him. I think that that's a particularly interesting thing. Maul obviously has been somehow keeping tabs on what's going on in the galaxy and probably wishes he was more a part of it. That's another bit of wonderful story, which is: What has Maul been up to? How did Maul get on this desolate planet? And we obviously don't answer those questions at this time, but it is stuff we've considered when we wrote these stories. It never came to be that he would face off with Vader, at least not yet." Filoni also stressed that despite the thought of them fighting each other seems interesting, there are more important aspects in the plot that deserves more air time like the "relationship between Ahsoka and Darth Vader as Anakin," adding the idea that Vader is obviously difficult to top.
Speaking of Ahsoka, she fought with Darth Vader last season and up to now it remains unclear if she survived or not. Filoni sees Ahsoka's strength might save her from death, so seeing her back for season 3 will likely happen.
The co-creator was cautious to spill more details, but he mentioned that viewers should not dismiss the possibility of her return. Rumor has it that Filoni is still working on the character's fate for next season.
"Star Wars Rebels" season 3 will return to the small screen this coming fall of 2016 on Disney XD. The network has yet to confirm an exact premiere date for the series.
