'Star Trek 3' Release Date 2016: Franchise Marks 50th Year Anniversary With New Movie

"Star Trek 3" is all set for release in 2016 -- the year marking the 50th year anniversary of the series.
As for the film itself, it remains to be seen whether or not it will live up to the track record set by "Star Trek Into Darkness."
"Star Trek Into Darkness" will be a tough act to follow, as it boasted a stellar cast and one of the most memorable villains to ever feature in the series, Khan Noonien Singh. The role of Khan was played by Benedict Cumberbatch, whose performance earned him critical acclaim and was a major plus point of the film. The next film in the franchise "Star Trek 3" will no doubt also feature a villain, but his identity remains under wraps.
As for the director of "Star Trek 3, " it isn't going to be J.J. Abrams who has been roped in to helm the seventh film in the Star Wars franchise titled "Star Wars: Episode 7." Instead Paramount has put Roberto Orci in charge of the yet untitled Star Trek sequel.
Franchise Herald notes that Orci was the producer of "Star Trek" and "Star Trek Into Darkness." The source said that was one reason why Orci was chosen to direct the third installment in the rebooted franchise. However, Abrams will still be a producer of the upcoming film. Rumors say that Abrams will use his famous "mystery box" style of directing when filming stars.
The cast has since come out in support of the directorial shift, and Karl Urban who plays Bones in the franchise stated in a Reddit AMA that "I am confident in Bob because no one knows these characters and the Star Trek universe better than him."
Orci meanwhile has stated that the five-year mission that formed the basis of the first Star Trek series will be an integral part of "Star Trek 3."
When the movie was announced, a lot of Trekkies cheered even as they expressed hopes that the next film in the franchise would explore new worlds and see the crew in deep space.
