"Sleepy Hollow" will soon make its way back to the small screen for its fourth season, and a Fox Entertainment boss recently spoke about how the series will move forward after female lead Abbie Mills' (Nicole Beharie) shocking death last season.

During Fox's presentation for the Television Critics Association press tour, Fox Entertainment President David Madden shared how network executives were hesitant to renew the program at first because of Beharie's exit.

"It was obviously a very hard conversation," Madden told reporters during the event (via TV Guide). "Crane (Tom Mison) and Abbie (Beharie) were the spine of the show. It was difficult to figure out whether it was right thing to do to continue or not. The producers very emotionally said, 'We think there is a fourth season of the show and longer.'"

The producers pitched ideas on new characters along with new situations for Crane, and the Fox executives eventually gave them the go signal. As the story moves forward, Crane will leave upstate New York to travel to Washington D.C. for more adventures. "We think there is a lot of good, new story to tell and that's why we made that decision," Madden continued.

In the past few months, new characters have already been confirmed to join the cast and the list keeps growing. Aside from "Lost" alum as the new "eccentric" Big Bad, Janina Gavankar has also been cast as the quasi-female lead named Diana. Three other actors recently landed guest roles including Oona Yaffe ("MasterChef Junior" Season 2) as Diana's young daughter Molly Thomas, Jerry MacKinnon ("Empire," "Chicago Fire") as a research analyst named Jake Wells and Rachel Melvin ("Awkward") as Jake's co-worker/engineering prodigy named Alex Norwood.

Gavankar's stint will only be for this season, which means another new female lead will take her place if Fox renews "Sleepy Hollow"  for a fifth season.

"Sleepy Hollow" season 4 premieres midseason 2017, but the network has yet to announce an official air date.
