'Sleepy Hollow' season 4 spoilers and updates: Premiere date set for mid-season 2017, Fox exec weighs in on major plot twist, another cast member leaves the show

Fox's supernatural drama series "Sleepy Hollow" has been renewed for a fourth season earlier this month, and it is scheduled to air during mid-season 2017.
Fans still can't get over the major plot twist in the season 3 finale wherein the show's lead character Abbie (Nicole Beharie) was killed off. In an upfront press conference call last May 16, Fox TV Group chairman Dana Walden weighed in on the network's decision to end the character's life. "There were a variety of factors that led to the end of the season," Walden said via TV Line. "It was not a decision that we wanted to make initially. We ended up being put in a situation where that was a decision that needed to be made."
The series will continue with actor Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane, and Walden is confident that the fans will still patronize "Sleepy Hollow" even without its original female lead. "What we know is that Tom Mison is a big star. And the Ichabod Crane character has been so central to the series and the storytelling and he feels like an original, big Fox character. We don't feel like it has to be the end of the life of the show," she added.
Will the fourth season serve as the show's swan song? The CEO does not think of it that way, saying, "We are not announcing a final season. We are not sure if it's a final season."
On another note, Nikki Reed will also exit the show after season 3. The actress was a series regular in the previous season where she portrayed the character of Ichabod's ex-lover Betsy Ross. However, her storyline already ended, which means that she will not be returning in season 4.
"Sleepy Hollow" season 4 returns to the small screen during mid-season next year, and it will have an order of 13 episodes.
