The fourth season of BBC's hit TV series "Sherlock" has been confirmed for a 2017 premiere, although only a few details were shared to the fans of the show inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original creation "Sherlock Holmes." However, "Sherlock" co-creator Mark Gatiss recently teased about the production of Season 4 by posting a photo on Twitter. The photo, which shows the resident Baker Street skull in close-up, was captioned by Gatiss with "I spy Series 4 #Sherlock." This sparked speculation among the fans that the Season 4 filming may have already taken place.

As reported by Radio Times, the photo garnered several reactions from the fans with one Twitter follower replying to Gatiss' post with an intended joke.

"Whose skull is this? A Sherlock fan waiting for series four," tweeted a fan.

The signature decaying wallpaper of Sherlock's living room in 221 B Baker Street is also noticeable in the background.

Gatiss, who also played Sherlock's older brother Mycroft for the past three seasons, has dropped this teaser following a rumor that "Sherlock" Season 4 will begin shooting scenes by April. For whatever reason that Gatiss posted the photo on Twitter, it serves as a positive confirmation for the fans that a new interesting chapter in Sherlock Holmes' life is now under way.

The same report from Radio Times noted that the filming of "Sherlock" Season 4 may take some time before the final product can be released on television, given the previous shooting schedule seen in the second and third season and the special "Sherlock" episode that premiered last December. It is estimated that Season 4 will premiere on New Year's Day 2017 at the very least.

Series co-creator Steven Moffat revealed in an earlier interview that Season 4 is going to be "dark and frightening" in contrast with the first three seasons. Another interesting rumor about the Season 4 cast is the addition of Tom Hiddleston as the third brother of Sherlock.
