'Sherlock' season 4 release date, spoilers news update: First official photo reveals new character, EP warns season 4 might be the last
Popular British TV series "Sherlock" returns for its fourth season early next year, and the new storyline will see the enigmatic sleuth solving mysteries in his hometown again. BBC recently released the season's first official photo and it seems that Det. Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) will have a new sidekick.

In the promotional image, the enigmatic sleuth appears to be consulting a canine companion in a scene. Not so much clues were given away in the photo but it seems that Sherlock will meet a new furry friend to accompany him while Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) is busy adjusting to his new role as a father for the first time. For the uninitiated, the show's source material which is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" introduced a dog named Toby who accompanies the detective in some of the stories.
Earlier this week, Cumberbatch and Freeman were seen shooting scenes on a fishing boat in Cardiff, Wales. Donning a long black coat, Cumberbatch seemed to be having a deep conversation with his co-star while the camera crew filmed them. The 39-year-old lead star previously mentioned that he is looking forward to the series' comeback. "I can't wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait... though not for long... And it will be worth it," he said (via Daily Mail).
"Sherlock" remains as one of BBC's most-watched programmes, and as a testament to its success, the show was recently nominated for six Emmy Awards. However, executive Steven Moffat warns fans that this season might mark the end of the popular drama. "I don't know how long we can keep it going," Moffat told Telegraph. "I'm personally willing but I'm hardly the main draw. I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show. But it absolutely could be."
Back in April, the press statement released by series creators mentioned something about a "story about to reach its climax..." Does this mean that an end is already on the horizon? Hopefully, the cast and crew who will attend the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con later this month will give more details on this matter.
Tune in to "Sherlock" season 4 which is expected to air sometime in January 2017.
