'Sherlock' season 4 release date, spoilers news: New on-set photos reveal weary Sherlock; Cast to join San Diego Comic-Con 2016

John Watson (Martin Freeman) and Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) in \"Sherlock\" | BBC

BBC's critically-acclaimed series "Sherlock" will soon make its much-awaited return for its fourth season, but what lies ahead for the mystery-solving duo of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson?

Filming is currently underway for the new season, and Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his lead role as the enigmatic sleuth. New on-set photos reveal that the detective is sporting a scruffy look which is quite far from the clean-shaven Sherlock viewers usually see. The images did not give away clues as to why he appeared to be weary, but if one thing is for certain, the plot begins with the detective back in his hometown. Meanwhile, John will have a new milestone in his life as a father. Along with his wife Mary, John begins preparing for the arrival of their bundle of joy. Many are looking forward to seeing how the dynamic between John and Sherlock will change because of this.

Actor Sacha Dewan has been recently confirmed as one of the guest characters for the season. He will portray a character named AJ according to his Troika Talent CV. Dewan's character description is still unknown, but he will join fellow guest star Toby Jones who has been cast as "one of Conan Doyle's finest villains".

According to the official Twitter profile of the series, the cast and creators will have a Q & A panel in the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con scheduled on Sunday, July 24 at 10 a.m. in Hall H. The post features images of Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat, Sue Vertue, and Amanda Abbington. Unfortunately, no confirmation has been made regarding Cumberbatch and Freeman's attendance. There are speculations about the well-loved show nearing its end because of Gatiss' previous hint that the story may be "about to reach its climax". Hopefully, the co-creator will also clarify his statement during the panel.

Catch the season 4 premiere of "Sherlock" which is expected to air sometime in January 2017 on BBC One.
