'Sherlock' season 4 release date, news and updates: Season 4 air date officially announced

As of now, Benedict Cumberbatch fans are at an all-time high with the release of Marvel Studios' "Doctor Strange," but they haven't forgotten the series that made Cumberbatch a household name, BBC's "Sherlock." Fans have been expectant of a fourth season for awhile, but now they have a release date for the season.
BBC One announced that "Sherlock" season 4 will premiere on Jan. 1, 2017, and the first episode will be called, "The Six Thatchers." The second episode of the series will reportedly be titled "The Lying Detective," but no title has been confirmed for the last episode.
Sherlockogy, however, reported that Cumberbatch has expressed his excitement for the season, and he said, "Oh boy, you have got a lot coming to you in episode three." No story details have been revealed but fans can expect something dark to come to their favorite BBC detective series.
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Steven Moffat had this to say about the series: "The first series was all about the beginning of their friendship. Second about the formative stages, the love and fear and loss and all that. The third was good days, me and my pal and my pal's wife. Those are golden days... [Season 4] is going to be... I suppose you'd say... consequences. It's consequences. Chickens come to roost."
Moffat went on to say that the show is "going to put [the fans] through the mill," and that they will be experiencing an emotional upheaval. He added that it will be a "tougher" season this time around.
There are even rumors that this season may actually be the finale of "Sherlock." Granted, lead actors Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have found an different level of popularity ever since they appeared on the show.
Will Season 4 be the last, or will fans get a chance to watch a fifth season?
