'Sherlock' season 4 news: Official premiere date revealed; Benedict Cumberbatch speaks on long break after season 4

Fans are bound to have their New Year's Day treat, as it was recently confirmed that "Sherlock" season 4 will be released on Jan. 1, 2017.
It has been almost a year since Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) appeared on TV, making fans more anxious to see the dynamic duo back to solving strange mysteries. Last night, "Sherlock" fans were given a much-needed boost after BBC's "The Great British Bake Off" aired, before the season 4 trailer finally debuted on the small screen.
Although the clip was the same one launched during the show's Comic-Con panel last month, it did contain one special bonus: the fourth season's official premiere date. According to reports, this season promises the darkest episodes yet, with Sherlock's life possibly in danger. Toby Jones will star opposite Cumberbatch and Freeman, and he will take the helm as the season's bad guy Culverton Smith.
Cumberbatch caught up with Wales Online to talk about his new film "Doctor Strange," and he revealed why there might be a long break for "Sherlock" after season 4. Fans will certainly be devastated with the news, but the actor promised that it will all make sense when viewers see the conclusion of season 4.
."I think there will be a lull. I don't think it will be in a year and a half necessarily but we will wait and see and maybe it will be," he said. "First and foremost we have got a fourth series for people to watch and understand and when they watch it they might go 'Oh yeah, maybe there does need to be a break now because of what happens in it. No spoilers."
The actor recently announced that he and his wife, theater director Sophie Hunter, are expecting their second child. He also mentioned in the interview that filming for the Marvel action movie was adjusted to his schedule for "Sherlock" and his on-stage stint for the role of Hamlet. "They also moved the schedule to accommodate Sherlock as well," he continued. "So there's a lot of mutual love going on between those two enterprises."
